Birthday Colors

Today we celebrated D's birthday! She painted her birthday letter.  Everyone else wanted to paint too, so we took the opportunity to learn about colors.  

 

 

T. I’m making a rainbow. I used red, and yellow and blue. I want green now. 

E. We love our pictures.

T. Let’s make blue.

E. I made a new color.

T. Look I made a rainbow.

E. I can I do red instead.

T. But you have your own color.

T. Do you see my picture? You can use yellow.

E. Look at all the colors.

 

G. I’m making a snake.

E. I made a circle.

G. I’m making an apple tree to get apples. 

G. See this is pink. It’s not all gone yet. Im making a family picture. Im making my family because I love it. Yellow! I love yellow. I love this yellow! How did this happen? It’s ok.

E. Are you done with the red paint?

E. Look I made green with the blue.

E. Okay, done.

 

While some friends were painting, others played with playdough or blocks.  M. and B. built a large castle with their blocks.  The play carried over to painting as M. created a painting of his castle to hang in the castle. Unfortunately the painting was too wet to hang in the castle.

B. I’m making a cow. 

M. I’m making a castle for my castle over there.

Fine Motor

             This was the first day we tried to write the letters of our names here in the Acorn Room.  We like to talk photos of their work on the first day so that we might see progress by the end of the school year!

Reflection

If a child lives with tolerance, He learns to be patient.

If a child lives with encouragement, He learns confidence. 

If a child lives with praise, He learns to appreciate.

 If a child lives with fairness, He learns justice.

After the long weekend, I started to reflect on how much we have accomplished this year.  The children have worked hard on independence, going to the potty, self help skills and building confidence that they can do things themselves. I then, started looking at old blog posts and picked out a few favorite pics.  Enjoy!

We made a bunch of eggs and then a nest to keep them safe.

Penguin Thursday

Today we continued learning about penguins. After reading The Emperor's Egg again, we built eggs out of kinetic sand. T said, "Look I made an egg."  Then G said, "You made a penguin egg!"  Some decided to get in the nest with the wooden eggs while watching birds or penguins projected on the wall.  At the light table, S looked at the "I am Small" book while M built an ice home for the penguins to live.  We also scooped black eyed peas in the sensory table and built nests out of wooden blocks.

Big Nest Continues

We have reached out to two classrooms here at the AFC for assistance in building the BIG NEST!  James from the Sycamore Room has given us his stick collection, and Seedling who shares our playscape with us decided to help gather sticks and branches. We collected the sticks and branches and added them to the nest.  Then we raked leaves and add them to the nest.  Then we played in our nest!  The little birdies in the nest wanted wormies. T- "wormie, wormie" S- "wormie-wormie"

BIG NEST!!!

My husband and I went to Alton IL to view the Eagles that migrate during January. I was inspired by the photo below.

                                           We started by collecting large sticks for our nest.

 

The nest was completed! 

M- The baby birds are tweeting, cause they are hungry!

We of course got gold fish and gave the baby birds a treat!!!

The Emperors Egg

 We introduced The Emperor's Egg to the children today. G- immediately went to the "Bird House" and found an "egg" and put at her feet.  G- "Look at my egg.  M- I need an egg. G- The eggs are over there.  M-went to get an egg, and came to the bird house. She also put the egg at her feet.  M- I'm a momma penguin. G- Me too."  They walked slowly around the bird house keeping their eggs safe and warm.

Painting the Nest

 We have tried several times to get the nest ready for little acorn birds.  We have tried nature, we have tried string, and today we had the big kids during capers help us paint the nest.

Forest Day

                  The roots of the tree were calling out to the children today, come climb me! A few of the Acorns answered the call, M ran over and started to climb. She then stopped climbing, and went down.  She then, walked around the roots of the tree and started climbing again.  She finally made it to the top. " I made it" she said.  While M was problem solving to make it to the top, E was watching intently and decided to climb on a lower limb.  " Look Dee Dee" she said all proud.

Welcome Back

 We are so happy to see the children today.  They were very excited to see us and each other.  We will be focusing on routines and procedures for the next 2 weeks.  Now that it is January, we will have more expectations.....  The children will start to carry their own plates to the trash cans after lunch, they will start exploring the letters of their names, writing their names, and have an introduction to numbers and one to one ratio on counting.

I am small   the book we were reading before break has moved to the light table with penguins and other materials for our storytelling area.

Reminder- Send pictures of the hanging of the bird feeders so that we can make our new class book.
