Capers

Today we capered with nearby classrooms. We heard children playing saying-
“Look at my Frog”
“I’m building a Hokey Pokey”
“I’m on the crosswalk”

Cold Day in the Sun

Since the weather was soooo chilly, we explored crosswalks in our classroom.  We read our new book from before our break. Then we went over the stop sign, the shape of the sign, and crosswalks.  The children started painting cardboard white to create our own crosswalk.

We pretended to walk on the Abbey Road crosswalk....
Wooden people walked on playdough created crosswalks.

We are excited to use our new crosswalks!!!

Routines and Procedures

After being gone for FIVE days, we all needed friendly reminders of how and what to do at school.  We went over our agreements/rules, we went over flip flop over the top, and new additions of hats and mittens. We headed out to the forest knowing that it would be a short visit if the temperature did not increase.

Before we left for the forest, I had located some old calculators and brought them to school. M was very excited. Look at the JOY on her face!!

So, we ended up walking around the block picking up nature, and pretending our stick was a fishing pole!

Sign says STOP!

Today we read a new story!   Sign Says STOP !   while we were reading, we went over the shape of the stop sign,  we counted the sides of the stop sign and introduced octagon, we clapped it out and counted how many sounds the word octagon makes.  The children counted three! After we discussed the octagon we moved on to the  crosswalk and clapped that out as well.  We discussed how it is important to walk on the white lines, look both ways to see if its safe and clear, then walk across the crosswalk.   We counted how many white lines are in a crosswalk.  We then went on a walk to all our crosswalks and counted the white lines.  The children noticed that none of them matched.  All the numbers are different. Some of the children thought that 6 and 7 were the same...... so clearly we have some work to do..... Have a wonderful Holiday Weekend!!

Rain Rain Go Away

As you all know, the rain put a damper on our forest day. So, we painted with watercolors. The children delicately put their paint brush in the water and then dipped it in the color and made a mark on the paper. Some of us stayed a long time (for a two-three year old), others made a mark and left.  A few of the paintings reminded me of the sky outside, where others reminded me of the color of fall leaves.

Transforming

We took a walk the other day, many things happen while we are on our walk.  This is one story of how one child interacted with a leaf.

As usual, we went to see if we could see a train.  We were running behind schedule (due to potty training) and didn't make it to our train viewing spot.   So, we walked through the secret garden located at Rock Hill and Lockwood.  As we walked quietly through the garden noticing the birds, T picked up a leaf.  He held it in his hand for a while then, something magical happened.....

Giving

The Acorns transformed their world by Giving Today.  Once again, an Acorn family donated items for us to carry to the office for the WGSD food drive.  Thank You!! We counted the items after we lined them up (sometimes we count a little too fast for our fingers to follow).  We then carried the items to the office, and said hello to all the adults along the way!  They seemed very happy to see us! Well done Acorns!

and yes.... it is like herding kittens.
THANK YOU ACORN FAMILIES for the Coffee and Cookies!

Sounds of the Forest

As we walked to the Forest today, we heard the crunching of the leaves as we stepped on them. The Acorns noticed there were lots of leaves in the Forest and wanted to listen to the sounds of the leaves in the Forest. We slowly walked into the Forest and listened to them crunch. Acorns also heard birds and a squirrel in the Forest.

Interacting with Peers

While on our walk to see if we could spot a train, we were walking down the sidewalk.  Some of the adults were holding children's hands for one reason or another..... and then I spotted these two.  Most of the time we hold someone's hand because the child asks us to do so. Sometimes we hold hands because someone isn't being safe.

All of these developments fall unders

-Social Emotional Development

- Language Development

- Gross Motor

-Cognitive Development

Sometimes they hold each others hands..... How sweet are the Acorns?

Who knew all of these growth points could happen on a walk to see a train?
