Caper Day!

Caper Day on Halloween!! 

The following photos are a series of determination, persistence and problem solving.

 He worked for a long time trying to get the funnel inside the tube.

 Once the funnel was attached, he then didn't know what to do with the tube.  How will the tube fit into the holder with the funnel attached???

 He then turned it upside down and pushed it through, with the funnel at the bottom. 

Then the funnel fell off.

 He pulled the tube through the holder. 

 He attached the tube!!!

 His persistence paid off!

 Hmmm someone else came to investigate.

 He examined the wooden stand and moved to the blue one to work.

 He adjusted tubes......

Corn Cobs

We sat with the children and watched the video of the popcorn being popped in the microwave. As the children watched themselves popping the popcorn. The children were very quiet the first time we watched the video. Then they wanted to see it again.  All of a sudden O-said,"that's me" then everyone chimed in.  The room was full of that's me, that's me.  

The purpose of watching the video, was to then ask the children how they wanted to cook the rest of the corn cobs. We read the book, Pop Corn to the children and learned the many different ways to cook popcorn.

When then decided to prepare the corn to cook on the stove.  We took the cobs and started popping off the kernels and putting them in the bowl. It will take us awhile to get enough to pop, as it is difficult for them to pop the kernels off.

POPCORN!!!

After weeks of testing the popcorn, we finally went into the kid kitchen and cleaned the microwave with vinegar and water, we let it steam up and then wiped it clean with sponges.

Waiting for our mixture of H2O and Vinegar was difficult. We all got to push the 1 minute button..... more than once.  It started to bubble!  We let it boil for about a minute and then we turned it off and started the timer on the ipad. We set it for 5 minutes and waited. When the timer went off, we opened the microwave and wiped it out!  It was clean!!

We then went to tell Ms. Katie, because she wanted to video tape it.  Finally we went to get the rest of the Acorns for the special even!

 

The excitement when the first kernel popped was pure JOY.  Everyone was very excited!

We then went back to the classroom to try our popcorn for the first time.  Everyone sat on the carpet and made their "shirt" bowl (this is what we do when we are out and about having snack in the forest or at the train).  We then took our first bite.  The sound was crunchie.  Crunches coming from everywhere.  There is nothing like freshly cooked popcorn off the corn cobb.  The acorns highly recommend planting it in the spring for a fall harvest and snack.

Harvest Day!

Today we went to check on the pumpkin!  It still has green on it, but with the change in weather coming on Thursday, we picked it!!  C, T, and T  helped pick and carry the pumpkin to the wagon. They then worked as a team to get the wagon up the hill and to our classroom. They did really well working together and getting the wagon up the hill. Great problem solving and working together!!

Next, we need to talk about how we are going to make pumpkin pie.

Working with Water

We are still exploring the language of water in the Acorn room. Lately, we have been focusing on the movement of water. There was an area today during Capers with blocks set up like inclined planes above a tub of colored water and eyedroppers. The children worked to squeeze the eyedroppers and get the water to flow down the ramp back into the tub.
We have a dog named Belle who lives next door to Ambrose. We see Belle almost every time we take a walk, and the children love to say hi to her. Belle's "mom" really enjoys seeing us, too, and last week she was kind enough to give the Seedlings and Acorns some little pumpkins! The Acorns have been very interested in the pumpkins, so today we added them to tubs of water and "washed" them. The kiddos loved it! Some stayed in the area for quite awhile, concentrating as they carefully ran the sponge over the pumpkin's curves. We are enjoying experimenting with all of the different ways to explore water!

Forest Excitement

This morning, we headed out for our Thursday walk to the forest when we found a surprise. There was a truck in the Forest! Even better, it was a dump truck and was dumping a large pile of mulch. We sat and watched with excitement while we had a snack. When the man got ready to drive the truck away, the wheels started spinning. The truck was stuck! We watched the man problem solve and try get his truck out. The Acorns shouted encouragement. "He needs a tow truck!" Said T. Nothing the man tried was working and he was still stuck. Finally, he called for backup. Another truck arrived to pull the truck out! I'm sure you can imagine the enthusiasm of the Acorns while all of this was unfolding. :) As the truck was being pulled out, they called, "you can do it!" When he got unstuck, everyone cheered. We then took the opportunity to climb and conquer the mulch pile. The workmen must've loved us. ;)

We then checked out all of the cool tire tracks left by the truck, and the Seecorns started the funniest game: the children began reenacting the truck scene. One kiddo would stand in a tire track and say, "I'm stuck!" then another friend would come over and pull the stuck friend out. We loved the connections they were making and their eagerness to help one another. We couldn't have asked for a more eventful Forest Day!
