Set 'Em Up/Knock 'Em Down

This morning, we needed to escape our room for a bit. The cold weather is no fun when it keeps us cooped up all day! One group did an obstacle course in the hallway, and another group went to the collaboratory. The friends in the collaboratory did such a great job working together! Some of the Seedling friends joined us, and the Seecorns immediately got to work trying to make the tallest towers ("castles") possible. C and K teamed up to create towers together. They took turns, with one friend adding a block at a time. When they were satisfied with their creation, C grabbed a long cylinder. "I can put this on top!" he cried. Then, he and K knocked it down together and repeated the building process.

In the other corner, "I" and J worked together on a similar task, taking turns adding to their tower. At one point, "I" struggled to reach the top of the structure with her block. J stepped over and said, "here, I can help you!" "I" offered her the block, and J placed it atop the tower. They each smiled and then let out excited squeals as they demolished their construction together!

The Acorns love the collaboratory, and it gives us so many opportunities to grow. Large block play teaches cause and effect, planning, encourages self-confidence, helps develop gross motor skills, and truly fosters social/emotional development in so many ways. We are lucky to have this versatile space right down the hallway.
Have a lovely Monday!
